BMX bikes are a special type of low bike, with smaller-than-normal wheels, that can be used for racing. They are designed to be very light but also very sturdy and lean for speed. They are also known to be easier to perform than regular bikes. BMX stands for bike motocross, which refers to the origin of the sport: kids watched motocross races on television in the 1970s and wanted to emulate them.
Since they did not have motorcycles of their own, they used their bikes to race on dirt tracks similar to the ones they had seen.
